Every day is a school day

I love learning. Particularly learning by doing. I recently bought, 'Jewellery Making - A Complete Course for Beginners', written by Jinks McGrath. I told myself that I'd study the book before purchasing any tools or materials. I've picked the book up half a dozen times since then, but have managed to acquire £100 of jewellery making stuff in the meantime!

Although I love working with resin, I've been seriously considering trying some metal-smithing for a while now. After meeting Rosalyn Powdrell (Instagram: @silverladyatwhitby) and being blown away by her work, I followed her advice and looked up Soham Harrison on YouTube (highly recommended and thanks Facebook/Instagram for the outage last week which gave me the push I needed to check out YouTube properly!), what I now lack in skills, I at least make up for in enthusiasm. I can't wait to get started!

Following these two epic discoveries, I went on to find the work of Beth Milner (Instagram: bethmilnerjewelry), a lady based out of Michigan who creates jewellery landscapes, recreating local woodland, lakes and rivers, with mixed metals. Exquisite work and so, so talented, it's difficult not to be green with envy!

I'm wondering whether I could practice some of the techniques I've picked up from all of these talented jewellers to recreate (at least in part), the Magic Lane logo as a mixed metal pendant. That would be quite something and seems like a reasonable (if probably

slightly ambitious!) place to start.

My 5am sessions in the workshop, with a coffee and an audiobook, before the rest of the house is awake is one of my favourite times of the day. I'm excited about what else I can learn, what skills I can develop, who else I might meet and where this journey might take me. Right now, life feels pretty good 😊
